Cherokee National Park
Tiawah, OK

Cherokee National Park began as a vision in 2004.

A vision of a place to gather together, to celebrate holidays, to play Cherokee games, to hold meetings and classes, and to share Cherokee culture with our families, friends, and neighbors.

With a land grant from Cherokee Nation in 2004, the purchase of eight acres was made in Tiawah, OK and the many volunteer hours started with the clearing of the land.

With an additional grant from Cherokee Nation in 2005, work began on the Community Building

The Community Building exterior was complete March 2007

And work began on the interior

Our Grand Opening in the fall of 2007 was successful with over 200 people in attendance.
Special thanks to Chief Smith, Cara Cowan-Watts and other leaders in Rogers County
who came out to celebrate and enjoy our new building.
Also special thanks to Charlie Soap and all of his volunteers who came out to cook.
And to our in house volunteers who put in their time to make this event possible.

In early 2008, with a grant from Cherokee Nation and Brett Cowan as our project manager we started our access and storm water drainage project.  As soon as the rains let up, work began on our parking lot, entrance road, and drainage dirt work.  Brett planned, coordinated and hired the contractors including Cherokee Builders who did a great job. Many hours of volunteer work was put into the project to match and satisfy the grant requirements.
